Six months in the Gold Mines by E. Buffum was received direct from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. The book immediately starts out describing California as seen by the early settlers. They saw the great state not as the progressive cesspool that many still want to live in. The early settlers did not want to be overrun by government interference into their life's or by over taxation. As the the California gold rush begins we are provided ones mans tales of encounters with native Americans both good and bad, tales of encounters with bears and the unpredictable weather of California in winter. Mostly though we learn how if a person worked hard and smart, they could get rich via mining gold. Rich or not, tales of catching scurvy due to a meat diet with no vegetables while working hard to make $100.00 or more in a really good day are described. The book ends with descriptions of California towns in the 19th century. if you like real west stories, real history or just want to learn more about the California Gold Rush, this book is for you.
