Crawlspace by Adam Christopher

When I picked up Crawlspace by Adam Christopher, I was eager for a gripping space thriller reminiscent of the classic sci-fi novels from the 1960s and 1970s. The book promised an intense Alien/Event Horizon-style story, which raised my expectations for suspense, horror, and compelling characters. However, my experience with the novel turned out quite differently.

Expectations vs. Reality

The premise of Crawlspace suggested a thrilling space horror adventure. Given the reputation of Adam Christopher as an author and the publisher’s endorsement, I anticipated a fast-paced narrative filled with tension and chilling moments. Unfortunately, the story did not deliver on these fronts.

The dialogue often felt slow and drawn out, which made it difficult to stay fully engaged. Instead of building suspense or advancing the plot, many conversations seemed to stall the momentum. This pacing issue led me to skim through large portions of the book, searching for something to grab my attention.

Lack of Horror and Character Depth

One of the most disappointing aspects was the absence of genuine horror elements. For a book marketed as a space horror, Crawlspace lacked the eerie atmosphere and unsettling moments that define the genre. The tension never quite built up, and the story missed opportunities to create a sense of dread or fear.

The characters also failed to resonate. They lacked depth and did not draw me into their struggles or motivations. Without strong characters, the story felt flat, and I found it hard to care about what happened to them. This disconnect made the slow pacing even more noticeable.

The Ending and Overall Impact

The plot remained relatively uneventful until the very end, where some action finally occurred. Unfortunately, by that point, I had already lost interest. The climax did not feel earned or impactful because the story had not built enough suspense or emotional investment.

While the book might appeal to readers who enjoy slow-burn sci-fi or are fans of Adam Christopher’s style, it did not meet my expectations for a space horror thriller. The lack of engaging dialogue, horror elements, and compelling characters made it a challenging read.
