American Scare Florida's Hidden Cold War on Black and Queer Lives by Robert W. Fieseler was obtained directly from the publisher and I chose to review it. We have all heard of the communist searches (McCarthyism) after the second World War. Who has heard of the Johns Committee, from Florida at the same time frame, though? The committee was a Democratic Party ran group that was searching for "communists" in the state of Florida, but managed to find more blacks and homosexuals than communists. As they were found they were fired and black balled. This book, while not being something I would generally read, held my attention and I read it all (and it is a thick book). Has such type commissions happened since, can they happen again? Are they going on right now? If you, or someone you buy gifts for, is interested in government purges by political parties, or simply interested in governmental inquires, give this book a read.
